Occupied Space

August 6, 2026

The chair is perhaps the most intimate piece of furniture – it holds our bodies, shapes our posture, affects how we feel. A seat can represent comfort, power, waiting, absence, conversation, labor, ceremony, protest, intimacy, memory, or rest but may simultaneously disrupt comfort, convention, or expectation. Some of these works emphasize precision and traditional practices; others embrace imbalance, asymmetry, or unfinished states. These are sculptural works that challenge, reinterpret, or celebrate the utility in objects, questioning the boundaries between art, craft, and design.

The $#%* Show: Mums

The $#%* Show (also known as “Stuff I Made Today”) returns for its 2026 edition at 5&J Gallery, CASP, bringing together 30 artists for the time-constrained exhibition that has become a Lubbock tradition.

Since 2014, the $#%* Show has challenged artists to create, install, and light new work based on a (surprise!) given material or theme within a 24-hour window before the exhibition opens.

Past themes have included “The Year 2050”, cats and dogs, randomly selected objects in banker boxes, ring, leisure, found art, clothing, and cardboard.

The 2026 theme will be revealed at a meet-and-greet dinner on Thursday, January 1st at 5 pm at 5&J Gallery, CASP, where artists will gather before beginning work on their pieces.

This year’s participating artists include:

Shit Show founder Hannah Dean and national Rabkin Prize for Art Criticism winner Christina Rees will co-curate this show for their fourth annual collaboration.
